Abstract: The aim of this paper is to analyse the king’s speeches at the local assemblies of the medieval Danish kingdom which are to be found in the central section of the Old Icelandic "Knýtlinga saga", a history of the kings of Denmark probably written toward the middle of the 13th century. Attention will be devoted to examining the role played by these speeches for the representation of the king and his prerogatives, with special reference to the narrative strategy underlying the depiction of the imago regis in the narrative, and particularly as regards the figure of Knútr IV Sveinsson. Within this framework, some of the major pragmatic features that characterise the speeches will also be touched upon and highlighted, in the attempt to point out their relevance for a better understanding and evaluation of the subject discussed in the present paper.
