Authors: Santipolo, Matteo
Issue Date: 2000
Publisher: Padova, Editoriale Programma
Abstract: The principles of Socio-phonetics, a newly-coined and created-on-purpose dicipline made up of the tehories and methods of both Socio-linguistics and Phonetics, are first exposed and explained and then applied to the geographical area of Greater London and the neighbouring counties. After providing a historical background of Cockney and Estuary English, an outline of the methodologies used in collecting recorded data and a detailed phonetic description of each of them follow. The last section is devoted to the sociolinguistic analysis of the area under investigation, also proposing, on the basis of the phonetic findings and the socail situation, hypotheses for possible future developments.
