|Title:||A note on backward anaphora|
|Abstract:||In this paper I would like to bring together four simple empirical observations about backward anaphora, and to critically re-examine Reinhart‟s view of this phenomenon. I will suggest that backward anaphora is constrained by the interplay of two factors: the placement of focus, on the one hand, and the intrinsic content of the co-referring expressions, on the other; furthermore, I will argue that a proper understanding of the phenomenon requires us to assume an incremental left-to-right interpretation process.|
