|Abstract:||In post-modern times the fragment - by definitions incomplete and imperfect - exercises a discreet fascination. Its theoretical and aesthetic magic seems to prevent any regress into totalitarian structures and intolerance while encouraging "weak" and modest figures of thinking, acting and aesthetic creativity. A more cautious approach to the dialectical evolution of modern "fragmentarism" and its contradictory effects since the times of early German Romanticism, when its triumphant progress began, however, indicate that it contains hidden aporias that disprove the soundness of its theoretical foundations. Keeping this in mind, from the analysis of the specific awareness of the importance and dignity of the incomplete that emerges from Hölderlin's works, from his novel 'Hyperion' to his interpretation of tragic matters and to his latest hymn 'Mnemosyne', one can see how Hölderlin's approach can show the way to a different, though still idealistic, notion of an everlasting imperfectibility of human destiny and history unconstrained, however, to lose or deny its vital contact with the entire and the absolute or divine. For Hölderlin an interruption of the relatioship between finite human "art" on the one hand and the infinite totality of unconscious "nature" on the other would create a fatal "gap" of nonsense and mean only death, not freedom, for human beings in their fragmentary but self- and world- conscious identity. Therefore to keep somehow in touch with the "gods" turns out to be the most important task also in modern times, a task which, once again, is for the poets, in particular, to undertake. In conclusion, our study tries to show how Hölderlin, engaged in this difficult path of dialogue with gods, managed to accept and bear even labyrinthine odysseys, fatal errors and failure, without surrendering to pure and arbitrary relativism or the essentially narcissistic affirmation of singularity- even though there is no simple return to any acritical metaphysical view or faith.|
