Abstract: One of the traditional ways of retaining orality in written texts is the framed tale, where one or several improvised narrators provide the whole or partial telling of the stories. This technique is typical of stories presenting wondrous or astonishing events which need to be made plausible and verisimilar through the words of direct witnesses of or participants in the action. Narrators and listeners cooperate in conferring truthfulness on the events. The analysis centres on three French 19th-century authors: Barbey d’Aurevilly, Maupassant and Villiers de l’Isle-Adam.
