Title: "This wholesale butchery": l'esperienza della Guerra Civile nei diari dei Confederati
Authors: Togni, Mario L.
Issue Date: 2003
Publisher: Padova, Editoriale Programma
Abstract: The intention of this essay is to explore the Civil War journals of six Confederate soldiers in the attempt to suggest a more authentic, complex, articulated vision of their perception of their war experience. Their narratives cover an extremely variegated, polyphonic range of interests, emotions, ideas beyond the expected, more or less rhetorical descriptions of military actions: from writing to cooking, from loneliness and homesickness to racist arrogance, from disease to imprisonment, from humor to fear, from dejection to frienship. Attention has also been paid to textual aspects, such as style and register, tone and rhetorical devices that imply a process of maturation.
