|Abstract:||During the period when Latin America was moving towards what Octavio Paz described as 'the sunset of avant-garde movements' two poles emerged in poetry: purism and antipurism. The first was hyper-artistic and indifferent to reality, the second was closely related to individual and collective reality, daily life and history. From out of the initial purism based on the French poetics of Paul Valéry and the Spanish poetics of Jiménez and Jorge Guillén (see Lezama Lima), there then emerged two tendencies, the metaphysical (the Mexican Contemporaneos') and the religious ( Pellicer, Sara de Ibanez). In antipurism there developed militant or engaged poetry closely associated with the Spanish Civil War (Neruda, Vallejo, Nicolas Guillén) , various political struggles in Latin American countries and themes of dictatorship and exile ( Juan Gelman, Mario Benedetti). In opposition to the excess of purism, and to the creationism of Huidobro, there also developed a strand of poetry concerned with the psychic reality of impulses and dreams, thereby opening up space for automatic writing and the surrealist imagination ( Paz, Mutis, Eielson.)|
