Abstract: The present paper is concerned with the phonetic description of the accent of the West Midlands. The aim is a descriptive one, and involves the anlaysis and illustration of the phonetic features which are typical of this area in the linguistic North of England. The reference accent is here considered RP(Received Pronunciation); all the regional speech characteristics which are outlined are compared to the RP pronunciation system.
