Abstract: The article examines in detail a Hebrew poem by the Mantuan rabbi Chananyah Eliakim Rieti (d. 1623) for the death of his wife. The text, extant in Ms Mich. 559 of the Bodleian Library (Oxford), has been edited and annotated for the first time. A thorough commentary on the poem and its sources is provided. The introduction is meant as a general survey on the production of funerary poetry such as elegies, epitaphs and dirges in the Age of the Ghetto, in the wider context of the cultural atmosphere of the Counter-Reformation. A prosodic note discusses some peculiarities in the punctuation and line structure of the Hebrew text.
