The present article is a re-elaboration of the Author’s graduation thesis (in conformity with the University system prior to 2001) at Ca’ Foscari University of Venice in Oriental Languages and Literatures. Through the contextual analysis of the historical circumstances and of Shah Abbas’ imperial ambitions which led to the emigration to Persia, imposed by the latter, of hundreds of thousands of Armenians, a great number of whom settled in Isfahan founding the city called New Julfa, the author tries to reveal and explain the premises and dynamics of the extraordinary flourishing of this community in a foreign land, dominated by a different religion, both in arts and crafts, and especially in commerce. The Armenian commerce of New Julfa would continue to expand throughout the 17th century and until the middle of the 18th, achieving world-wide dimensions. The analysis aims at the same time to understand the ways and reasons that made it possible for these two ethnically and religiously different communities to co-exist peacefully and fruitfully: the Persian Muslim majority, and the Armenian Christian minority.it
