|Title:||Il Commento al Cantico dei cantici di Levi ben Gershom in latino per Pico della Mirandola|
|Publisher:||Padova, Editoriale Programma|
|Abstract:||In recent years many scholars have pointed out that for a better evaluation of the influence that Judaism, and particularly kabbala, had on Pico della Mirandola as a thinker, it would be necessary to consider the way the works of Jewish authors came to him. In his main work - Pico della Mirandola's Encounter with Jewish Mysticism (1989)- Ch. Wirszubski noticed that most of Pico's Kabbalistic sources may be ascribed to Hebrew works which the philosopher owned in Latin translation. Consequently, it would be very useful to compare Hebrew works which Pico read in Latin translation with the originals that have been identified. The paper deals with the Latin translation of Levi ben Gershom 's philosophical commentary on Songs of Songs, which the convert Flavius Mithridates accomplished for Pico. The Introduction is examined in the detail by comparing the Hebrew original to the Latin translation, and differences, incongruous interpretaions and Kabbalistic interpolations due to the arbitrary intervention of Mithridates are outlined. This kind of examination is aimed at valuing the degree of faithfulness on the Latin translation to the Hebrew original and find out whether Mithridates modified the philosophical content of Levi ben Gershom's Commenatry and how such modification influenced Pico della Mirandola.|
