Abstract: This study intends to offer a contribution to the numerous attempts of the scholars to classify Arab and Omani boats. In fact the development of Omani seafaring and traditional boats is hard and complex to trace on the basis of available sources. On the other hand geography favored the contacts of Omani sailors with neighbouring peoples and the Omanis were famous for their ship-building. The treatment cannot be limited in space to Oman but it is necessary to extend the search to all Indian Ocean beacuse traditional ship types do not take account of national barriers. First, in this article it is individualized the outstanding features of the Arab and Omani ships before the arrival of Portuguese power. Particularly it is taken in consideration the characteristics of the hulls, masts and sails, and different techniques of construction
