This work is the initial outcome of a wide-ranging research by Riccardo Zipoli and Hamīd Riḏā Bahārlū devoted to analysing sources (dīwāns, tadhkiras, anthologies, dictionaries, etc.)for obscene texts. Fuller results from this research will be published as soon as possible. The concept of the obscene in the Muslim world is considered by focusing on texts of Neopersian poetry. A brief account is provided of the current state of work in the various sectors in terms of editions, translations and research projects, including many quotes from different authors. Varoius translated passages on masturbation are taken as examples, in particolar two tarjî`-band, one by Jamāl al-Dīn Kāshī and one by Zākānī.it
