Abstract: The article deals with the definition of the frontier, in order to introduce the role of the captives in the historical and literary tradition of Argentine culture. From the perspective of a postmodern novel by César Aira, 'Ema, la cautiva' (1981), it is possible to reverse the tradition of the 'literatura fronteriza', attributing a new meaning and new significances to the figure of the white captive woman of the nineteenth century. Playing with parody, César Aira thus offers a personal and original reading of the literary past.
